Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of her two appearances on Roseanne. The parents of her didn't want her to take on acting roles until she was an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry says she didn't want to become an actor during highschool but decided to start playing as a way to make friends during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to land small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. Homesickness, however, caused her to move to California again where she began to work on stage. She and her mother starred on Broadway together in The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC political drama Scandal that starred her dad. In the same year, the actress was selected to play a younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen character of her mom's. The character was assigned an audition to the actress, despite the fact that she has a family tie with the character.
